A miracle in time for Christmas

Chance, fate, or an amazing stroke of luck? We think this story is nothing short of a miracle.

Reg King, Foundation Trustee, shares an amazing story of hope.

During 1979 our youngest daughter, aged six, was diagnosed with terminal cancer with an expected life span of less than twelve months.  Whilst hospitalised in the Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick, a gentleman, we did not know, entered the ward and placed something on her side table and promptly left.  What he had left was a small plaque with just three words on it, “EXPECT A MIRACLE”

I can happily report that today, thirty four years later, my daughter is married to a marvelous young man and has two gorgeous young daughters.  In addition, she is a fitness fanatic having completed numerous marathons, triathlons and the Port Macquarie Iron Man.

Moving forward to the present day I am now intrinsically involved with the Lynne King Cancer Foundation.  During the past year we have been assisting a woman, Susan, through her own cancer ordeal.  She is a single mother with three children and was told in May of this year that it was unlikely she would survive past Christmas.

In late August I attended a fund raiser for her children on a Friday night in Brisbane.  Susan was feeling very apprehensive on the night because of a scan she had done that very afternoon, the results of which would not be known until the following Monday.  Her concerns on the night were about whether the cancer had accelerated or not and that her given timeframe may have been further shortened.

The following Sunday I was having breakfast with my brother and his wife in Caloundra.  I noticed a gentleman looking around and thought he may have lost something.  He told me that he was merely looking for a comfortable table for his elderly mother to have breakfast at.  I got up and helped him find a suitable table.  I then returned to my breakfast.

Shortly afterwards an elderly lady pushed her walking frame up against my table and said to me, “Thank you so much for your kindness!”  I said that it was nothing and that I hoped she would have an enjoyable breakfast with her doting son.

As she moved off, still offering her gratitude, she placed a small white card on the table in front of me.  You will appreciate my startled surprise when I saw what was on the card.  Just three words, “EXPECT A MIRACLE!” I sat back in my chair and almost without thinking uttered the words, “Let it be for Susan!”

The following morning I received an excited call from Susan to exclaim that the scan revealed to everyone’s surprise that the tumor had virtually gone, and that there was no sign of any fresh activity.

A subsequent scan just recently has confirmed that the tumor has now completely gone and Susan is now in remission!

Make of this what you will, for it will no doubt mean something different for each person who reads this story.
